Rhineland Pattern: #1

This deck is a variant on the Rhineland Pattern and was printed in the Netherlands. It is decribed in the World Web Playing Card Museum as being in the category ...

"Speelkaarten Fabriek Nederland"
deck "Rhineland pattern", 1932-1959

The faces are smooth but the backs are rough and unsealed, as a result the cards have cupped somewhat. The also must be hard to shuffle and deal. The use of scenes on the aces are common in other dutch cards.  Interesting that the Ace of clubs features Borobudur.

This 9th century Mahayana Buddhist Temple in Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia, was uncovered in 1814 by H.C. Cornelius, a Dutch engineer, under the directions of Lieutenant Governor-General Thomas Stamford Raffles the Governor of the time. The Dutch East Indies government later continued the work on the site. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site but nowhere near as widely known as the other buildings featured.
