The Bolognese type cards are rather long and narrow, and the deck is a direct derivation of the tarot cards from Bologna.

However despite the name this deck is what is known as the Piacentine pattern. The pattern is used around much of central and northern Italy, a region that encompasses both Piacenza and Bologna. The makers use of Tipo Bologna is not entirely inaccurate. There are differences however, in the Piacentine pattern the Ace of swords is curved with a cherub.
